Fort Myers Sanibel Island Charter Fishing For Snook

Snook Fishing in The Fort Myers, Sanibel Island, and Naples Area

Snook are plentiful in the back bays of Fort Myers and the Sanibel area of Florida's Gulf Coast. Snook can be picky at times making it lots easier to go Snook "fishing" than it is to go Snook "catching".  Our clients always comment on how hard a snook strikes. They create an a huge boil on the surface and an unmistakable "popping" sound. Snook are known to be challenging, unpredictable, and stubborn which is why I think they are one of the most popular fish with our clients.  The average size of the snook we catch is 16 to 30 pounds, and a really big one is going to push 40 pounds.

Our peak season for Snook fishing in the Ft Myers area begins when spring temps start to heat up the flats in April and continues until late September. In the spring our local Snook population begins to move out of the rivers and start their annual spawning ritual. This is the time of the year when we find them in large numbers  along the beaches in the Ft Myers and Sanibel area. There are also large schools of Snook in all of our local passes that lead to the Gulf Of Mexico.  As fall approaches, Snook in the Ft Myers and Sanibel area begin to migrate towards the upper bays and rivers where they will spend the winter.  They tend to settle into deep holes on a low tide or on oyster bars on the high tide. This is the time of the year when the Snook will be feeding heavily as they recuperate from the spawn and prepare for the cooler water of the winter months.

If it's true that patience is a virtue, it's an absolute requirement when your fishing for Snook in the winter months. The aggressive predator of summer months  turns into a laid-back sofa spud from December through February. Snook are looking for any source of heat such as residential canals, power plant outflows and rivers. They prefer to lay low, hoping their bodies can absorb enough warmth to get them through the winter months. Still, their an opportunistic by nature and if it looks like an easy meal they will pounce on it. Snook are one of the greatest saltwater game fish. I like to call them the Largemouth Bass of the sea. When you experience the initial run of a big Snook for the first time you will be hooked for life. We are lucky to have such great Snook fishing here in the Ft Myers and Sanibel area. Hooking into one of these explosive fish is not only exciting but also a challenge. Whether your under a bridge or near the mangroves they will test your fishing skills and your patience.
