Shelling The Barrier Island of Cayo Costa

Dig up more than just sand dollars from the shell filled beaches of Cayo Costa. This 9 mile Island has been linked to a history filled with Cuban Fisherman, Calusa Indians and pirates. Enjoy a day of hunting for shells on this 2,426 acre island while keeping an eye out for the Bald Eagles, Gopher Tortoises and Bobcats that inhabit the island.

Not only is Cayo Costa home to a variety of shells but it also boasts a rich historical spirit. Some 10,000 years ago, the Calusa Indians became the 1st occupants to inhabit the island. In the 19th century, the island became home to Cuban Spanish Fisherman, where they created "fishing ranchos". The fisherman caught, dried and then sent the fish to Cuba to be sold in the local markets. In the 20th century 20 pioneer fishing families moved onto Cayo Costa Island. The community had a post office, school, grocery store and cemetery. There are a number of unmarked graves throughout the island. Along one of the park trails is "cemetery trail" where you'll find members of the pioneer families.

There's also a well known tale of the pirate, Gasparilla. He was daring, ferocious and showed no mercy in battle. For 38 years he terrorized ships, killed passengers and held wealthy women for ransom. The U.S Navy moved in which forced Gasparilla to retire.Once the pirate realized he was defeated he took his own life. The Navy established a quarantine base on the island which also became home to a brothel. After long days of fishing, infectious sailors would spend the evenings inside this busy establishment. Join Captain Wes for a 20 minute boat ride to the barrier island of Cayo Costa, where the sea leaves treasures and the pirates buried jewels!
